Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

May 31, 2018

Dental crowns are one of the most common dental procedures out there. Their uses are seemingly limitless, and they are extremely effective. If you have never had one before, you may not know much about them. Maybe you have seen kids in your neighborhood with teeth completely covered in a shiny metal; these are dental crowns. For kids, they are usually placed because of a bad cavity, and the distracting color doesn’t matter very much to them since they are typically placed onto a temporary “baby” tooth. You will be pleased to know, though, that dental crowns can be made of different materials and used for many more things than just cavities.

So, What Are They Good For?

If your dentist has suggested a dental crown, there is a good chance it is because you had a severe cavity that spread throughout your tooth and caused a lot of damage. In this case, a crown is used to hold together and protect what is left of your tooth structure. However, there may be some other reasons that you may want to ask your dentist for a crown, instead of the other way around.

  • Crowns can be used to hold together cracked teeth and prevent them from cleaving
  • Dental crowns can also be used to cover over unsightly teeth. That’s right! That means if your teeth are unusually yellowed or perhaps chipped, or even if you just dislike the shape of your teeth, a crown can be used to correct this much like a dental veneer could be used.

The upper hand that crowns have over veneers, however, is that they have the added benefit of protecting your teeth from infection and they also provide support to damaged teeth.
